Nine warning signs of a fake moving company — and exactly how to verify a genuine one before you hand over your household.
Search "packers and movers" in any Kerala city and half the results are not companies at all — they are phone numbers with a rented lorry. Every week our branches get calls from families whose goods are being held hostage by an operator demanding double the agreed price, or who paid an advance to a "company" that never turned up. The tricks are the same every time. Learn the nine signs below and you will spot a fraud operator in the first phone call.
The classic trap. A genuine 2 BHK interstate move cannot be done for ₹8,000 — diesel, tolls, packing material, labour and GST alone cost more. Fraud operators quote absurdly low to win the booking, load your goods, and then demand two or three times more on the highway. Once your household is on their truck, you have no bargaining power. If a quote is 40–50% below every other quote you received, that is not a discount — that is the bait.
A real moving company is GST registered and gives a proper GST invoice. Ask for the GSTIN on the first call and verify it free at the government portal (gst.gov.in → Search Taxpayer). If the name on the GST record does not match the company name, or they say "GST bill costs extra", end the call.
Genuine companies take a small token advance to a company account or a QR in the company name. A "manager" pushing you to send 50% advance to a personal Google Pay number is the single biggest fraud pattern reported to us. Once that money leaves your phone, both the money and the "company" disappear.
Ask one simple question: "Where is your office? Can I come there today?" Fraud operators have no answer — the address on their website is fake or belongs to someone else. A genuine mover has a real branch with staff, packing material stock and parked vehicles. If you are moving something valuable, spend 30 minutes and visit the office first.
On loading day, a real company arrives with uniformed, trained crew and proper packing material — bubble wrap, corrugated rolls, stretch film, labelled cartons. A fraud operator arrives with a plain rented lorry and three casual workers carrying one roll of old newspaper. By then it is late to cancel — which is why signs 1–4 matter before booking day.
Because customers trust these badges, fraud sites simply copy-paste them. Both are verifiable: IBA approval can be checked on the Indian Banks' Association website (iba.org.in → Transport Operators search), and an ISO certificate has a certificate number and issuing body you can look up. A genuine company will happily send you its certificate copy; a fake one will change the subject.
"Sir, don't worry, we will adjust everything" is not a quotation. Insist on a written quotation listing the price, what is included (packing, loading, transport, unloading, unpacking), insurance terms and the delivery window — before loading. On loading day, both sides must sign an inventory (packing list). No paper means no proof, and no proof means no consumer-court case later.
Check the reviews, not the stars. A genuine company has reviews spread across years, with names, photos of real jobs and the occasional ordinary complaint. A fraud listing has 40 five-star reviews posted in the same fortnight, all in the same writing style, on a Google profile created last month. Also look at the photos: stock images of foreign trucks are a giveaway — real movers post photos of their own crews and their own lorries.
A lorry receipt / consignment note is the legal document that proves a transporter carries your goods. Refusing to issue one — or refusing to discuss transit insurance — means the operator plans to be untraceable if anything goes wrong. Transit insurance is cheap (ours is ₹700 per ₹1 lakh of declared value); a genuine company offers it, a fraud avoids it.

Verify the GST number at gst.gov.in, read the oldest Google reviews rather than the newest, ask to visit the physical office, and insist on a written quotation and a consignment note. A genuine mover will provide all of these without hesitation.

Note the vehicle number, pay under protest if you have no choice, keep every payment proof, then call the National Consumer Helpline 1915 and file a case at your District Consumer Commission.
